10k.Caash

American rapper and dancer who originated the Woah dance move.

Last updated

Treyvon Britt (born February 15, 2001), known professionally as 10k.Caash, is an American rapper and dancer from the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas, Texas. He gained recognition in 2018 for performing 'the Woah,' a dance move that went viral online and which he has been credited with creating. After signing to Def Jam Recordings in 2018, he released his debut mixtape, The Creator (2018), and its single 'Aloha' went viral the following year.

Career

Treyvon Britt grew up in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas, Texas, where he was born. During high school, he played defensive tackle on the football team but left without graduating.

By 2020, he had enrolled at Texas A&M University–Commerce to study accounting. As a performer, he went by 10k.Caash and was part of the Rollie Bros, a Dallas dance crew that invented the "Rollie" dance in 2015. He gained fame as one of the creators of "the Woah," a dance move that Pitchfork's Nadine Smith called a "descendant of the Dougie." In the summer of 2018, clips of him doing the Woah on Triller racked up millions of views, and a Triller video featuring him alongside rapper Lil Uzi Vert helped the move catch on widely.

Following a suggestion from Lil Uzi Vert, 10k.Caash began rapping professionally in July 2018. That same summer, he put out his first single, "Dip Swag Dip." In November 2018, he dropped his debut mixtape, The Creator, on SoundCloud, with its title and cover art reflecting his claim that he invented the Woah. He signed with Def Jam Recordings shortly after.

The mixtape included guest verses from Matt Ox, Rico Nasty, Riff Raff, Famous Dex, Asian Doll, and Lil Yachty, and Def Jam released it on streaming platforms in May 2019. Jon Caramanica of The New York Times ranked it the tenth best album of 2019. One track, "Aloha," produced by Kenny Beats and featuring rapper G.U.N, went viral in early 2019 after influencers Laila Wiggins and Antonio Willis started a dance challenge with it on Dubsmash and Instagram.

Def Jam put it out as a single in March 2019, followed by a music video in May, and the song later appeared in the fifth season of HBO's Ballers. Another track, "Kerwin Frost Scratch That," blew up on TikTok, appearing in over 1.5 million videos by May 2019, when it was also released as a single. In December 2018, he released a Christmas EP called Ho Ho Ho. By April 2019, Spin's Winston Cook-Wilson noted that 10k.Caash was "widely co-signed."

That year, he opened for ASAP Rocky, performed with Trippie Redd at Astroworld Festival, and played the JMBLYA music festival in May. In November 2019, he became the first client of the newly launched artist management company Inertia Management.

Musical style

Jon Caramanica of The New York Times wrote in 2020 that 10k.Caash rapped 'as if he was learning to rap without knowing that rap music already existed' and described his 'exceedingly short' songs as 'quasi-nonsensical, punk space-rap redolent of the early, rowdy Beastie Boys.' In a 2020 review of Planet Swajjur, Nadine Smith of Pitchfork wrote that his 'bite-sized' songs were 'designed with virality in mind' and likened his sound to Soulja Boy. Alphonse Pierre of Pitchfork called him the 'spiritual successor' of Soulja Boy and noted his 'dance rap' songs had 'minimalist,' 'catchy, rudimentary,' and 'bass-heavy' production with 'lyrics that could be pantomimed.' Jordan Darville of The Fader described his music as 'dance-rap' and compared his 'yelped' flow to that of Ugly God.
