Nate River
The young detective who succeeded L and finally caught Kira.
Nate River, known as Near, is the younger of L's two successors, raised in Wammy's House in Winchester, England. After L's death, Near begins his investigation of the Kira case, gathering evidence over four years before revealing himself as L's true successor and becoming head of the Special Provision for Kira. He is highly intelligent and views investigations as puzzles, though his childish appearance and demeanor can cause others to question his abilities. Near is calm, devious, and values results above all else, often using tactics that are barely within the law.

Lore & Background
Near grew up in competition with Mello to succeed L. After L's death, Near took the position as L's successor and became the head of the SPK (Special Provision for Kira), an organization created specifically to catch Kira. He is a placid, pragmatic character with a sharp tongue, known for his white hair and pale clothes. His habits include constantly playing with toys—building towers of dice and playing cards—and illustrating his exposition with small finger puppets. He is also seen completing blank puzzles, which emphasizes his problem-solving skills. Near was the person who succeeded in identifying and capturing Light as Kira.
Reader's Guide
Near's character highlights the theme of succession and the evolution of detective work in the Death Note universe. Unlike L, who relied on eccentricity and direct confrontation, Near employed a more detached, analytical style, using toys and puzzles as tools for visualization. His success in capturing Light demonstrates that patience and systematic thinking can overcome even the most brilliant criminal mind. Historically within the narrative, Near represents the next generation of genius detectives, having been trained in the same institution as L and Mello.
His rivalry with Mello, who conceded the position to Near after L's death, drove both characters to pursue Kira through different means—Near through legitimate investigation, Mello through criminal connections. Thematically, Near's story serves as a resolution to the central conflict of Death Note. His capture of Light Yagami ends the reign of Kira, proving that no matter how powerful the Death Note makes its user, human ingenuity and collaboration can ultimately prevail.
