Territorial Officials of Dakota

Magistrates and commissioners from Yankton.

The Dakota Territory's officials reach Deadwood through two men in the series. In season one Al Swearengen bribes the local magistrate, Clagett, to quash a murder warrant; when Clagett tries to extort him further, Swearengen enlists Clagett's toll collector, Silas Adams, to kill him, and Adams becomes Swearengen's agent. In season two Commissioner Hugo Jarry, the representative of Yankton in the camp, tries to persuade Swearengen and Cy Tolliver that Deadwood should join Dakota rather than Montana.

Lore & Background

Jarry ends up siding with Swearengen, who, with the help of Bullock, Sol Star and Adams, forces him to make concessions to Deadwood so that it can outbid Montana on annexation. Merrick refuses to print Jarry's notice casting doubt on the camp's claims, and Steve Fields leads a lynch mob against the commissioner. At the end of season two the papers confirming Deadwood's annexation into the territory are signed by Bullock and Swearengen with Jarry present.

Reader's Guide

Clagett (season one) and Jarry (season two) are the faces of the territorial government in the camp; the annexation deal is where the officials matter most.
