Yukio's first encounter with the X-Men occurred when Wolverine struggled with Shingen Yashida, father of his girlfriend Mariko Yashida. At that time Yukio worked for Shingen, tasked with killing Wolverine, but instead developed a crush on him and aided his downfall. Later, she joined Wolverine's wedding to Mariko and helped fight Viper and Silver Samurai, posing as a decoy disguised as Mariko. Storm, inspired by Yukio's 'madness' and lust for life, adopted a new look with a mohawk and black leather. Yukio later helped Wolverine fight the ninja master Ogun and developed a rivalry with the X-Man Gambit, once framing him for a crime she committed. She is also part of Professor X's secret Mutant Underground network.

Yukio's significance lies in her role as a non-mutant ally who bridges Wolverine's world with Japanese culture and ninja traditions. Her free-spirited, danger-seeking philosophy—viewing living in danger as the ultimate adventure and death as the final prize—influenced Storm's iconic image change. She also became a mother figure to Wolverine's adopted daughter Amiko Kobayashi, training her in martial arts. In live-action media, two distinct characters named Yukio appeared: one in The Wolverine (2013) played by Rila Fukushima, a mutant with death-predicting abilities, and an unrelated lesbian superhero in Deadpool 2 (2018) and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) played by Shioli Kutsuna, later adapted into comics as Yuki 'Yukio' Ohara, girlfriend of Negasonic Teenage Warhead. The original comic Yukio remains a notable supporting figure in X-Men lore, appearing in video games and animated series.
