Background and composition

The song is performed at 110 BPM in D♭ major. Capaldi told Brut that he wrote it about his deceased grandmother. In an interview with NME, he said it took six months to write, explaining that his best songs come from long, difficult sessions at the piano rather than effortless inspiration.

Music videos

The first music video, released on 28 February 2019, was made in partnership with organ donation charity Live Life Give Life. It features actor Peter Capaldi, a distant relative, as a widower who finds solace by listening to his late wife's heartbeat in the recipient of her donated heart. A second video, released on 29 August 2019, shows Capaldi wandering streets after a lost love while friends and strangers try to stop him; his brother Aidan appears at the beginning pulling him from a bench. Capaldi said the video is about relying on others for strength during hardship.

Chart performance

"Someone You Loved" reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart and remained there for seven consecutive weeks. In the US, it debuted at No. 85 on the Billboard Hot 100 and climbed to No. 1 after 24 weeks, one of the longest ascents to the top in chart history. It spent three non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 before being replaced by Post Malone's "Circles". In Ireland, the song accumulated 26.8 million streams in 2019 and was the year's biggest-selling single.
