Plot
John Stewart, a former Marine sniper and Medal of Honor recipient struggling to readjust to civilian life, sees a spaceship crash nearby. The ship belongs to Ganthet, who dies from his injuries. The Power Ring Ganthet carried, previously worn by Hal Jordan, flies to Stewart and fastens onto his finger. The ring then carries Stewart to the Justice League Watchtower, where he finds Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, and Vixen tracking a space disturbance.
With the Guardians of the Universe unreachable and Jordan apparently dead, Stewart and Green Arrow take Ganthet's repaired ship to Oa. There they find the planet in ruins and the Green Lantern Corps wiped out. They meet Thanagarian warrior Shayera Hol, who shows them security footage of a Rannian ship docking at Oa just before the attack. Shayera explains that the war between Thanagar and Rann had briefly ended, with Jordan overseeing a joint Zeta-Beam project meant to benefit both worlds.
The experiment initially succeeded but then malfunctioned, pulling Thanagar into Rann's atmosphere, destabilizing both planets' ecosystems, reigniting the war, and apparently killing Jordan along with thousands of Thanagarians and Rannians. Shayera blames Rann for sabotaging the experiment and attacking Oa, but Stewart and Green Arrow push for a deeper investigation. The group travels to a Rannian military outpost that Thanagarians had raided. There they find Adam Strange, a Rannian hero thought dead but actually teleported randomly by Zeta-Beams that are drawn to him.
Strange denies Rann attacked Oa and leads them to Rannian High Command, which is under Thanagarian assault. Captain Kantus reveals that Rannian scientist Sardath, Strange's father-in-law, has turned the Zeta-Beam project into a doomsday weapon aimed at Thanagar. Shayera and Strange review footage from earlier attacks and realize a third party has been impersonating both Rannian and Thanagarian ships to prolong the war.
