College career
Despite a late-night tweet that led many to believe he would choose Texas, Deandre Baker signed with Georgia on National Signing Day. As a true freshman in 2015, he appeared in 11 games. The following season, he suffered injuries against both Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech. After the 2017 campaign, Baker earned Second-team All-SEC honors. He briefly considered entering the 2018 NFL draft but decided to stay for his senior year. That season, he surrendered just 175 receiving yards and a 40.2 NFL passer rating, both top-five marks among eligible cornerbacks. Baker was named a consensus All-American and claimed the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back. Across his entire four-year college career, he allowed only a single touchdown.
Professional career
Baker was selected by the New York Giants in the first round, 30th overall, of the 2019 NFL draft after the Giants traded up with the Seattle Seahawks, giving up their 37th, 132nd and 142nd picks. He was placed on the commissioner's exempt list on July 27, 2020, following his May 2020 arrest, and the Giants waived him on September 8, 2020. On November 19, 2020, Baker signed to the practice squad of the Kansas City Chiefs. He was elevated to the active roster for weeks 15, 16, and 17 of the 2020 season, recording his first career sack on Justin Herbert before breaking his femur on a non-contact play. He re-signed with the Chiefs on February 9, 2021, and was waived on August 7, 2022. On January 25, 2024, Baker signed with the DC Defenders and was named to the 2024 and 2025 All-UFL teams.
Personal life
A warrant for Deandre Baker's arrest was issued on May 14, 2020, on charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault with a firearm, alongside Seattle Seahawks player Quinton Dunbar. The next day, Baker's lawyer stated he had multiple affidavits that supposedly cleared his client. The two were accused of robbing party guests at gunpoint and surrendered to police by May 16. On August 7, 2020, Baker faced four counts of robbery with a firearm. Evidence indicated the alleged victims may have accepted $55,000 to alter their statements about Dunbar. All charges against Baker were dropped on November 16, 2020.
