When the infection spread, their mechanical simplicity became a blessing; they could run on low-quality fuel and withstand rough handling better than modern civilian cars. Many were left behind by fleeing soldiers or abandoned by early survivors who lacked the skills to maintain them. In the current wasteland, spotting one is often a sign of potential wealth or danger. They are frequently associated with military zones like Chernogorsk or remote Livonian roadsides. Their presence signals that someone once had the means to travel far from safety, leaving behind only rust and silence for new scavengers.

Once started with sufficient gasoline, the vehicle offers superior traction on dirt tracks compared to civilian cars. However, neglect is fatal; without oil changes or engine repairs using tools like wrenches and patch kits, the vehicle will eventually seize. Its boxy frame provides ample storage in the trunk for supplies, making it ideal for long-range scavenging runs across Chernarus or Livonia. While its open roof offers visibility during combat against infected, it leaves occupants vulnerable to gunfire from above. Experienced groups often modify these units with armor plating or additional lights, though such modifications are temporary fixes in a decaying world. • In 1974 three stock UAZ-469B became the first cars to ever conquer Mount Elbrus, taking 38 minutes to go 4200 m above sea level.
• The UAZ-469 was able to run on gasoline with an octane rating as low as 72, although 76 was preferred.
• On June 4, 2010, a UAZ Hunter set a world record for biggest passenger capacity by fitting 32 people including the driver, beating the previous record of 23 people in a Kia Spectra.
• The UAZ-469 and UAZ-3151 were exported to eighty countries, with between 1.65 to 2 million units produced.
• In 2017, to honor the model's 45th anniversary, UAZ launched a special edition limited to 469 copies, referencing the car's original index.
