Hypothetical is a British comedy panel show that aired on Dave for four series between February 2019 and July 2022. It was created by Josh Widdicombe, who co-wrote it with Tom Craine and Matthew Crosby. Widdicombe hosts the programme alongside James Acaster. Each episode features teams of celebrity guests, typically comedians, who are given odd hypothetical scenarios by Widdicombe. They then have to explain their approach, following rules Acaster provides. Acaster scores their answers from zero to five points, and the team with the highest total at the end wins. After scoring, Acaster often shares his own solution.
The show relies heavily on improvisation and props, much like a parlour game. It includes pre-recorded video segments and role-played solutions performed with Acaster in the studio. Several recurring rounds appear: "What Would You Do?" presents a situation to one or two panelists, with up to five points available. "Not For a Million Quid" asks all four panelists how much money they would need to endure a scenario; the lowest bidder must prove they can do it, though Acaster can disqualify bids he thinks are fake. "The Great Wall of Celebrities" involves guessing how other celebrities answered hypotheticals—one celebrity per episode in series one, then six from series two onward, with teams taking turns. "The Randomiser" (series two and three) uses three tombola machines to generate a random scenario for one or two panelists. "James's Wishlist" (series four) has two panelists competing to make one of Acaster's personal hypotheticals come true. "On The Spot" (series four) is a rapid-fire round where a panelist answers quick questions against a clock, with Widdicombe or Acaster pausing it if the answer is insufficient. The final round, "Big Hat Small Hat," always decides the winner: the trailing team picks a celebrity from "The Great Wall of Celebrities" and guesses whether that person would choose a giant or tiny top hat to wear daily for life. The points on offer vary and are not consistently tied to the score gap, so the episode hinges on that guess.
In May 2022, a podcast spin-off launched, where a guest host asks Widdicombe and Acaster hypothetical questions.

The initial idea was pitched via a WhatsApp conversation, and subsequently developed by London-based Hat Trick Productions and commissioned as a UKTV Original for Dave in July 2018. The show is filmed in front of a live audience at Pinewood Studios, with the first series filmed in August and September 2018. Acaster and Widdicombe had previously worked together, with Acaster often appearing as a guest on Widdicombe's XFM (now Radio X) show.
