The Silo

Humanity's last refuge beneath a toxic sky.

The Silo is a massive underground bunker designed to house the remnants of humanity after an environmental catastrophe rendered the surface uninhabitable. Standing as both a sanctuary and a prison, it operates under strict rules enforced by a central computer system and a governing body comprising The Mayor and Judicial authorities. Residents are forbidden from leaving except for sanctioned 'cleaning' missions that often result in death from exposure, creating a society built on fear and limited knowledge of the outside world.

Lore & Background

History within the Silo is fragmented and controlled. Official records state that the surface was poisoned by industrial pollution or war, necessitating the construction of the bunker before the collapse became total. However, rumors persist among the workers that the outside world might be recoverable, or that the Silo itself is a test rather than a salvation. The society functions on a rigid caste system based on job assignments: Mechanics maintain life support, Farmers grow food in artificial light, and Administrators enforce laws.

The most feared role belongs to those sent out to clean the air filters at the surface; they rarely return alive, as they are sent out to die from exposure, not subjected to memory alteration. Deep lore suggests that previous Silos were destroyed or abandoned, but this is not established in widely-known canon. The current structure is a relic of a lost age, built with technology and resources that no longer exist within its walls. Multiple Silos exist—50 in the books, 10 in the TV series—forming a network of isolated bunkers.
