When the North Stars moved to Dallas in 1993, the K-Wings became the Stars' farm team. The team's history included a name change to the Michigan K-Wings during the 1995 playoffs, a move the league wanted to boost appeal for larger markets. The Stars' decision to end their affiliation, combined with league instability and concerns about larger-market teams, led the K-Wings' owners to request inactive status on April 17, 2000. The team was dissolved, and the IHL folded a season later.
