Nieuwendyk was acquired by the Dallas Stars in a trade with the Calgary Flames on December 19, 1995, in exchange for Jarome Iginla, Corey Millen, and a 1995 draft pick. He scored 14 goals and 32 points in 52 games to finish the 1995–96 season, then improved to 30 goals in 1996–97 despite missing the first month with fractured rib cartilage.
