Mitchell's upbringing occurred in Port McNeill, a small Vancouver Island logging community in British Columbia.[1] During the 1996 NHL entry draft, the New Jersey Devils chose him in the eighth round with the 199th overall pick.[2] March 27, 2000, marked Mitchell's first NHL game, a 5-2 defeat against the Toronto Maple Leafs.[3] On March 4, 2001, the Minnesota Wild acquired him by trading defenceman Sean O'Donnell.[4]
A four-year contract worth $14 million was signed by Mitchell with the Vancouver Canucks on July 1, 2006.[5] Mitchell agreed to a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings on August 25, 2010, paying him $3.5 million each season.[6] The final 42 games of the 2015–16 NHL season were missed by Mitchell, primarily due to worries about the long-term effects of another brain injury.[7]
