Jyrki Lumme
Finnish defenceman who became Vancouver's all-time scoring blueliner.
Last updated
When Lumme departed the Vancouver Canucks, his 83 goals and 321 points were the highest totals among defencemen in the franchise's history.[1]
Life and work
During August 1988, Lumme agreed to a two-year deal with the Canadiens and spent the 1988–89 season with both Montreal and their AHL team in Sherbrooke.[2] A knee injury occurred during a December 5, 1988, NHL match versus the Detroit Red Wings, which kept him out of action for a period.[3] Lumme stated that he did not think he suited the Canadiens' system and anticipated being traded.[4] The 1994–95 NHL lockout prompted Lumme to play for Ilves Tampere in Finland, where he notched 8 points in 12 games.[1]
Lumme received the Babe Pratt Trophy for the fourth and last time in 1997.[1] After a short period with Dallas, the Stars traded him to the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 21, 2001, for Dave Manson.[5] Lumme's final NHL game occurred on April 23, 2003; afterward, the Maple Leafs bought out the last year of his contract.[6]
