Rhydymwyn F.C.

Welsh football club from the Alyn valley.

Rhydymwyn F.C. is a football club based in the village of Rhydymwyn, Wales, located in the Alyn valley roughly 4 km upstream from Mold. The team currently competes in the North East Wales Football League Championship Division, which sits at Tier 5 of the Welsh football pyramid, and plays its home matches at Dolfechlas Road.

The club was founded in 1911 and initially played in the local Halkyn and Clwyd Leagues. In 1990, they moved up to the Welsh Alliance League. Their first season there saw them finish fourth and reach the Cookson Cup final. The next year they placed sixth and lost the North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup final 2–1 to Colwyn Bay, then a HFS Loans League side.

In 1993, they finished fourth again and won the Alves Cup. The following season, they ended third on goal difference after a three-way tie with Llangefni Town and Llanfairpwll. The 1994–95 season brought the Welsh Alliance League title and promotion to the Cymru Alliance, along with the FAW Trophy, won 1–0 against Taffs Well at Caersws. In 1995–96, they finished fifth in the Cymru Alliance and retained the FAW Trophy by beating Penrhyncoch at Newtown.

They came second in the league in 1996–97 behind Rhayader Town, then won the title in 1997–98. Various reasons prevented promotion to the League of Wales.

Off the field, the club secured a £75,000 pavilion funded by Delyn Borough Council and a £26,000 Sport Lot Award to extend their function room. Much of this progress was credited to manager Ken Knowles and a committee of committed local people. After Knowles retired following eleven seasons, the club appointed a player/manager from within the squad. However, the club then resigned from the Cymru Alliance due largely to a lack of players.

Returning to the Welsh Alliance League, they found success again. In 2003–04, under caretaker manager Phil Eaton, they reached both the Barritt and Cookson Cup finals, winning the Cookson Cup and narrowly losing the Barritt Cup. The next season, they lost the league championship by one point to Bodedern and also lost the FAW Trophy final 3–1 to West End at Rhayader. After those successes, the club struggled under a different manager, with mid-table finishes in the Welsh Alliance.

Success returned in 2007–08 when they beat Barmouth & Dyffryn United to win the Barritt Cup for the first time at Farrar Road, Bangor. In 2008–09, they finished runners-up in the Welsh Alliance behind Bethesda Athletic. The 2009–10 season saw them win eight of their first nine games and secure promotion back to the Huws Gray Alliance with a record of 21 wins, 4 draws, and 5 defeats. Their first season back was poor: they finished 14th with 18 points and dropped out of the Huws Gray Alliance at the end of the season.

Due to boundary changes, the club found itself in the third tier of Welsh football, but in the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) rather than the Welsh Alliance. Daniel Seamarks was appointed manager to rebuild the team. The next season, Rhydymwyn finished second and were promoted back to the Huws Gray Alliance after champions FC Cefn withdrew their promotion application. In 2012–13, they finished 14th with 28 points, safe from relegation as only two clubs were promoted and Rhyl were promoted to the Welsh Premier as league champions.

The 2014–15 season was poor: goalkeeper Andrew Ruscoe, signed from Cefn Druids, became captain and later Player of the Season before moving to Brickfield Rangers, but the team did not win a single game all season and were relegated from the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance (Tier 2). The following season, the club could not raise a team and folded. In 2016, the club reformed and entered the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area). They later played in the Ardal Leagues North West at Tier 3 before resigning from that league in September 2022. The next season, they reformed again and joined the North East Wales Football League Championship Division at Tier 5.

The current backroom staff includes first team manager Anthony Weaver, assistant manager James Duffy, goalkeeping coach John Weaver, first team coach Stew Tarran, and groundskeeper Les Buxton.
