Metal Max

Post-apocalyptic RPG series known for open-ended vehicle combat.

Players can choose character classes like mechanic or soldier, fight in turn-based battles on foot or using customizable tanks, and alter the ending through their actions.[1][2] The Metal Max franchise stands as an early illustration of open-world, non-linear role-playing games, where players are not forced along a fixed narrative.[1]

Making and release

In 2005, Success developed and published Metal Saga for the PlayStation 2, the first 3D title of the series.[3][4] Hiroshi Miyaoka, who established Crea-Tech in 1988, is the creator behind every Metal Max game and several Metal Saga titles.[5] The initial Metal Max title launched for the Famicom on 24 May 1991, having been delayed beyond the Super Famicom's debut.[6] A TV spot for the game promoted it with the phrase "We've had enough of dragon-slaying".[7]

Between 1996 and 2005, the series saw no new Metal Max releases.[8] Metal Max 4: Gekkō no Diva came out for the Nintendo 3DS in November 2013.[9]

What the cited sources add

A gamebook of the original Metal Max, written by Shin Murakami, was published in 1991 as part of Mandarake's adventure gamebook series.[10] Metal Max 2 is the best-seller of the series, with more than 250,000 copies sold.[11] Crea-Tech announced in 1999 a Dreamcast sequel initially called Metal Max Overdrive, later retitled Metal Max: Wild Eyes, but the project was ultimately canceled.[12] Satoshi Kadokura wrote the music for Metal Max.[13]

Famitsu awarded the first Metal Max a score of 29 out of 40, and the game sold over 120,000 units within Japan.[11]
