Career
After Swarthmore College, Gillim spent three years teaching fifth graders in Philadelphia before heading to graduate school. A media education class at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education got her into television writing. Her 2003 adult animated series Hey Monie! earned praise for its improvised comedy and for starring Angela V. Shelton as Monie, an African-American woman. In 2019, Lisa Hanawalt, creator of Tuca & Bertie, listed Hey Monie! among adult animated shows made by women. On co-creating Molly of Denali, Gillim called the show “long overdue,” adding that the team partnered with Alaska Natives to build the characters and world because the story wasn’t theirs to tell.
