Heston Blumenthal

Pioneer of multi-sensory cooking and scientific gastronomy

Last updated

On 27 May 1966, in Shepherd's Bush, West London, Heston Marc Blumenthal was born to a mother who was English and a father who was a Jewish businessman from Southern Rhodesia.[1] Following a manic episode in November 2023, Blumenthal was sectioned in France and received a bipolar disorder diagnosis.[2]

Key facts and history

He left school at eighteen and worked briefly at Raymond Blanc's Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons before spending ten years as a credit controller and repo man while teaching himself French classical cooking.[3] A pivotal moment came in the mid-1980s when he read Harold McGee's On Food and Cooking, which encouraged him to question kitchen practices.[4] The Fat Duck received its first Michelin star in 1999, a second in 2001, and a third in 2004, making it the third UK restaurant to achieve three stars.[5][6] In January 2011, he opened Dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London, which earned its first Michelin star in 2012 and a second in 2014.[7]

At age sixteen, while on a family holiday in Provence, Blumenthal's interest in cooking was sparked by a meal at the three-Michelin-starred L'Oustau de Baumanière.[8] The Fat Duck, which Blumenthal opened in 1995 after buying the run-down Ringers pub in Bray, initially served French bistro dishes such as steak and chips.[9] For his contributions to British gastronomy, Blumenthal was made an OBE in the 2006 New Year Honours.[10]

What the cited sources add

The Sydney Morning Herald profile notes that a psychiatrist friend once suggested Blumenthal might have Attention Deficit Disorder due to his intense focus.[11] The same source states that Blumenthal has grapheme-colour synesthesia, seeing letters as colours.[11] The CNN interview recounts that Blumenthal opened the Fat Duck in 1995 staffed only by himself and a pot-washer, cooking French bistro items.[12] Blumenthal's 2017 ADHD diagnosis, he thinks, enabled him to hyper-focus on his professional tasks.[2]
