Crown of Teeth Codex

Grix

The first Bound: a counting scout, blade, and conscience who survives all twelve books.

Grix is the very first monster Cael binds in Book 1, an awakened scavenger resembling a ratkin or kobold. Serving as the Bound's loyal scout, blade, and moral compass, Grix acts as Cael's primary sounding board while maintaining a compulsive habit of counting everything around them.

Remarkably resilient, Grix survives every single book in the series to witness the finale in Book 12. Despite the return of Vraye, Grix remains steadfastly loyal, standing as one of the few recurring survivors alongside Burl and Coil.

Lore & Background

As Cael's first bound entity, Grix established the foundation for their partnership by functioning as both a weapon and a conscience. This unique duality allows Grix to serve as a sounding board for Cael while executing dangerous tasks as a scout or blade.

Grix's endurance is legendary within the series; they are one of only three characters, along with Burl and Coil, to survive the entire narrative arc. Their loyalty remains unbroken even when faced with the terrifying return of Vraye in the final chapters.
