Allan Border

Australian captain who led team to first World Cup title and held multiple world records.

Last updated

Border's 156 Test appearances stood as a record until Steve Waugh surpassed it, and his 11,174 Test runs were a global record until Brian Lara exceeded that total in 2006.[1][2] Under Border's captaincy, Australia secured its first world championship by winning the 1987 Cricket World Cup.[1]

Life and work

He made his Test debut in the 1978–79 Ashes series at the MCG, scoring 29 and a duck.[3] Border hit his maiden Test century against Pakistan at the MCG, scoring 105 before a collapse saw Australia lose by 71 runs.[4] He became the first batsman in Test history to pass 150 in both innings of a Test, scoring 150 not out and 153 against Pakistan in Lahore.[5] For his contribution to reclaiming the Ashes, Border was named the 1989 Australian of the Year.[6]

At the time of his retirement, Border held the records for most appearances and highest run totals for Australia in both Test and ODI formats.[2]

What the cited sources add

He said that if other Test teams learned from Australia's example, its supremacy would be healthy for world cricket.[7] He noted that the West Indies dominated for 15 years and everyone thought that was acceptable.[7] During a 2005 interview, Border explained that he deliberately adopted a tougher, more distant attitude toward the English as captain.[7]
