Biography
Nikolai Chub graduated at the top of his class in 2006 with a degree in management and informatics from the South-Russian State Technical University, also known as the Novocherkassk Polytechnic Institute. He later completed a graduate degree in economics at the same university. Before becoming a cosmonaut, he ran the aerospace company Space Tu, LLC. Chub was chosen as a cosmonaut candidate in 2012 and officially became a test cosmonaut on June 16, 2014.
In 2019, he took part in the European Space Agency’s CAVES training program, which was held across Italy and Slovenia. He served as a backup crew member for the Soyuz MS-12 mission to the International Space Station and was originally assigned to Soyuz MS-17, but American astronaut Kathleen Rubins replaced him. In January 2022, Chub was denied a visa to visit the Johnson Space Center in the United States; after the denial became public, the visa was issued a few days later. He was a backup for Soyuz MS-22, then flew on MS-24 and returned to Earth on MS-25 after spending a year in space.
