Fon creation myth centers on Mawu and the rainbow serpent Aido Hwedo.
Last updated
The Fon creation myth is the traditional creation story of the Fon peoples of West Africa. Various versions exist, with the creator often identified as Mawu, the moon being and mother of all gods and humanity, or as Mawu-Lisa, a dual sun/moon being. In some accounts, the androgynous Nana Buluku is the ultimate creator, who gave birth to Mawu and Lisa. The rainbow serpent Aido Hwedo carried Mawu as she shaped the earth, and now supports it by coiling beneath the seas.
