Plot

In the fictional Mexican town of Madakueruyobaka, a new cactus species is discovered whose buds produce delicious honey. Hiroshi Nohara's company, Futaba Shouji, sees a business opportunity and opens a branch office there, making Hiroshi the president. The Nohara family moves to Mexico, adjusting to local food, language, attire, and residents. A Cactus Festival is held, and during it, a bud blooms into a giant killer cactus that spawns smaller killer cacti, which attack and eat people. The town panics, and the only exit collapses when the Mayor accidentally causes an explosion. While the cactus attacks again, Hiroshi and Misae seek escape, leaving the Mayor with Shinnosuke. The Mayor gives Shinnosuke food, prompting him to pee; he urinates on a small killer cactus, which shrivels and dies. Shinnosuke reports that water is the cacti's weakness. The group devises a plan: Hiroshi creates a large water-filled balloon called Sabo-chan to throw at the Queen Cactus, whose thorns will burst it and kill the cactus.

Characters specific to the movie

The Killer Cactus is the main villain, a new species intended to revitalize Madakueruyobaka with its honey-like buds. Its fruit resembles a dragon fruit. During the festival, it turns into multiple carnivorous cacti that prey on people by responding to sound; their weakness is water. The Queen Cactus, the primary target, has strong vitality and can rejoin cut parts by grafting. In the final battle, all killer cacti merge with it, but it is defeated when Shinnosuke bursts a water-filled balloon. Eaten people are released unharmed. The setting draws influence from the sci-fi novel The Day of the Triffids. The Mayor of Madakueruyobaka, real name Duyaggo Eraindesu, was born there and sought to revitalize the town with the cactus; after the attack, he joins the Madakueruyobaka Defense Group. Nene Rodriguez, also known as Rainbow Kamen, is a masked Lucha Libre wrestler who is high-spirited but timid in fights, often faking injuries. After being called a sissy by Sumaho-chan, he fights the final battle with Mariachi and wins. Mariachi is a mariachi player who holds a guitar and sings of beautiful things; Shinnosuke calls him unemployed uncle. After being eaten and released, he joins the Defense Group as a decoy. Carolina is also a character in the film.

The Embassy of Mexico in Japan symbolically gave Shinnosuke Nohara (costumed) a Mexican work visa, residence permit, and voting card for his parents, presented by ambassador Carlos Almada. The costumed Shinnosuke visited Mexico, including a school, cactus forest, and beach, and a special screening premiered at a local school.
