Plot

One night, the Nohara family all share a pleasant dream that is interrupted when a big fish appears and eats them. The next morning, Hiroshi reads in the newspaper that another town experienced the same nightmare, which has since ended. He learns that Misae, Shinnosuke, Himawari, and even Shiro all had the same dream, and they wonder if the phenomenon is occurring in Kasukabe as well. At kindergarten, Shinnosuke discovers that everyone else in his class also had the identical nightmare. A mysterious girl named Saki transfers to Futaba Kindergarten and joins Shinnosuke's class. Although the other children are excited by her arrival, Saki remains cold and does not get along with them. That night, Shinnosuke and the others are taken to a fantasy dreaming world called Yumemi-World, where they ride on big balls and have their wishes granted. Masao becomes a manga artist, Kazama a TV announcer, and Nene an actress and singer. Shinnosuke wishes for chocobi and sweets, then for young attractive girls in swimsuits, and is taken to a beach area for enjoyment. While the children have good dreams, the adults' dreams are soon converted into nightmares. Children have greater dreaming power than adults, and as the children's power is consumed, they too begin having nightmares. The Kasukabe Defense Group holds a meeting and decides to solve the nightmare problem. They gradually befriend Saki and ask her to join their group, which she agrees to. Kazama realizes that Saki was not present in the shared dream and suspects that she and her family are the ones sucking up good dreams and converting them into nightmares.

Production

The movie takes place in the world of dreams, marking the first time 'dream' was chosen as the theme for a Crayon Shin-chan film. It is also the first time a comedian, Hitori Gekidan, was appointed to write the screenplay. Gekidan stated he had a strong interest in dreams and wanted to implement their mysterious charm as the movie's theme. He described the film as exciting, funny, emotional, and touching, and expected many families and anime fans to attend theaters. He noted greater pressure because the movie was a work of fan service, and to meet fan expectations he spent seven to eight months holding meetings with staff to improve the plot. While writing, he also considered his daughter's perspective so the film could be enjoyed by both parents and children. He said that using animation, he fully represented an appealing fantasy dreamland where Shinnosuke goes berserk. For the first time in eight years, Wataru Takahashi was involved in writing the screenplay of a Crayon Shin-chan movie, his last time being on the 16th film, which also contained elements of 'dream'.
