The story behind the equation begins in September 1959, when physicists Giuseppe Cocconi and Philip Morrison published an article in *Nature* titled "Searching for Interstellar Communications." They argued that radio telescopes were now sensitive enough to detect signals from other star systems, and suggested that such signals might be broadcast at a wavelength of 21 cm (1,420.4 MHz)—the natural emission line of neutral hydrogen, the most common element in the universe.
