Background and recording

Co-written in 1956 by Charlie Phillips and Odis "Pop" Echols—a musician and KCLV radio owner from Clovis, New Mexico—the song was taken by Phillips to Norman Petty. Petty arranged a session at his Clovis studio with Buddy Holly on guitar and Jerry Allison on drums. That country version came out on Coral Records and found success in Texas and Mexico. Petty then urged Coral to produce a pop rendition with the McGuire Sisters, which became a number one hit in 1957 and one of the trio's biggest singles. A Johnny Cash version, drawn from his Sun Records catalog, briefly reappeared on the Cashbox country chart in 1961. The chorus was later sampled for the title track of the Bollywood film Dil Deke Dekho. Its melody bears a strong resemblance to "I'm Daffy Over You," written by Chico Marx and Sol Violinsky, and also echoes Saint-Saens' Havanaise.

Cover versions

British singer Alma Cogan had a hit with the song later in 1958. The McGuire Sisters released a twist arrangement in 1960, which became their last chart hit as a trio, bubbling under the Billboard Hot 100 at number 107. Swedish versions were recorded by Alice Babs (with lyrics by Eric Sandström) and Lily Berglund. Linda McCartney produced a reggae version with Lee Perry. Johnny Cash included it on Now Here's Johnny Cash. Shigga Shay sampled it in "Shigga Morning" featuring Inch Chua. Bagel Bites used the song for a 1996 commercial jingle titled "Pizza in the Morning". The Wilburn Brothers recorded it on the album Side by Side (Decca, 1958).
