Madhan Karky

Tamil lyricist, dialogue writer, and computer science researcher.

Madhan Karky

Madhan Karky Vairamuthu works as a lyricist, screenwriter, research associate, software engineer, and entrepreneur. He earned a PhD in computer science from the University of Queensland. His career began as an assistant professor at the College of Engineering, Guindy, after which he moved into Tamil cinema, writing lyrics and dialogue. He left teaching in early 2013 to work full-time in film, while also founding the Karky Research Foundation (KaReFo), an educational research organization focused on language computing and literacy. He also started Mellinam Education, which creates educational games and storybooks for children, and DooPaaDoo, an online music platform that promotes independent music and distributes film soundtracks.

Karky is the eldest son of lyricist Vairamuthu, a seven-time National Award winner, and Ponmani, a Tamil scholar and professor at Meenakshi College for Women. His younger brother, Kabilan, is a novelist and also writes lyrics and dialogue for Tamil films.

He grew up in Chennai and attended Loyala Matriculation School in Kodambakkam. By his own account, he was not a strong student, doing well only in Tamil and English. In high school, he developed an interest in computer science. He entered the College of Engineering, Guindy, affiliated with Anna University, and began studying computer engineering in 1997.

For his final-year project at CEG, under Professor T.V. Geetha, Karky built the Tamil Voice Engine, a text-to-speech system for the Tamil language. A research paper on this project was selected for the Tamil Internet Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Other projects included a Name Generator for a course on creativity and innovation, which produced random names pronounceable in Indian phonetics, and a Compiler Design project that created a high-level programming language to specify lexical and grammar rules. For Chennai Kavigal, he made a spell checker for a Tamil word processor, using natural language processing and a root dictionary from a morphological analyzer to check word correctness.

After finishing his bachelor’s degree in 2001, Karky started a master’s at the University of Queensland in 2003. There, under Dr. George Havas, he worked on a project applying computation theory and mathematics to analyze an algorithm that reduces matrices to Hermite Normal Form, a unit upper triangular matrix.
