CTERA was founded in 2008 by Liran Eshel and Zohar Kaufman. The company released its first cloud storage gateway, the C200, in 2009, combining local network speed with off-site cloud backup. In 2010, the C400 gateway added office server backup and recovery and multi-user collaboration. The C800 gateway, released in 2011, offered 24 TB of raw local storage. In 2016, CTERA announced a virtual cloud storage gateway deployable from VMware or KVM servers, and later that year updated its gateway portfolio for efficiency and capacity.
