Adi Shamir is an Israeli cryptographer and computer scientist, born in Tel Aviv in 1952. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Tel Aviv University, followed by a master’s and doctorate in computer science from the Weizmann Institute. After postdoctoral work at the University of Warwick and research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he joined the faculty at the Weizmann Institute in 1980, where he has remained; he also became an invited professor at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 2006. Shamir is best known as a co-inventor of the Rivest–Shamir–Adleman (RSA) algorithm, a foundational public-key cryptosystem developed with Ron Rivest and Len Adleman. For this work, the three received the 2002 ACM Turing Award. Beyond RSA, Shamir’s contributions include the Shamir secret sharing scheme, the breaking of the Merkle-Hellman knapsack cryptosystem, and the invention of visual cryptography. With Eli Biham, he discovered differential cryptanalysis in the late 1980s, a general method for attacking block ciphers that had previously been known but kept secret by IBM and the NSA. In 1984, he introduced identity-based cryptography, allowing a user’s public key to be derived from a unique identifier like an email address. With Amos Fiat, he devised the Fiat–Shamir heuristic, a method for converting interactive identification protocols into digital signatures. He co-founded RSA Security and, with Rivest and Yael Tauman, introduced ring signatures in 2001. Shamir also led real-time cryptanalysis of the A5/1 GSM cipher, developed the Fluhrer–Mantin–Shamir attack on RC4, and demonstrated side-channel attacks including acoustic cryptanalysis that extracted RSA keys from laptop sounds. Later work includes adversarial examples in machine learning and the theory of neural network decision boundaries. In 2019, after his US visa application went unanswered, he suggested reconsidering where scientific conferences are held.
