Bjarne Stroustrup

Danish computer scientist who created the C++ programming language.

Last updated

Bjarne Stroustrup is a Danish computer scientist born on 30 December 1950 in Aarhus, Denmark.[1][2] He is best known for inventing the C++ programming language, which he began developing in 1979.[3]

Life and work

He then worked as a technical fellow at Morgan Stanley from January 2014 to April 2022.[4] In his own words, he "invented C++, wrote its early definitions, and produced its first implementation"[3] C++ was made generally available in 1985.[3] Between 1969 and 1975, Stroustrup studied at Aarhus University, where he earned a Candidatus Scientiarum degree combining mathematics and computer science.[5]

A PhD in computer science was awarded to Stroustrup by the University of Cambridge in 1979; David Wheeler supervised his dissertation work on distributed computing.[6] A full professorship at Columbia University has been held by Stroustrup since 2022.[7][8]

What the cited sources add

An interview with Stroustrup states he needed a tool for a project requiring hardware access, high performance, and help with handling complexity.[9] The same interview quotes Stroustrup saying he has wanted thread support in the standard for at least 15 years.[9] Another source notes Stroustrup added Simula-like classes to C because no language could meet his requirements in 1979.[10]
