Unplanned extubation
Unplanned removal of a breathing tube, often requiring re-intubation.
Unplanned extubation is the unintended removal of an endotracheal tube from a patient on mechanical ventilation. It may be self-extubation (deliberate removal by the patient) or accidental extubation (removal by healthcare professionals or accidental patient action). This event can prolong mechanical ventilation, hospital stay, and costs, and about 60% of affected patients require re-intubation, which raises the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia.
