Anatoli Alekseyevich Ivanishin, a Russian cosmonaut born on 15 January 1969 in Irkutsk, Siberia, first reached the International Space Station in November 2011 as a flight engineer aboard Soyuz TMA-22. Over the course of three missions, he logged 280 days in orbit and commanded the station during Expedition 49. After retiring from the cosmonaut training centre in October 2021, he shifted his focus to scientific work.

Early life and education

Ivanishin finished secondary school in Irkutsk in 1986. After an unsuccessful attempt to enter the Chernigov Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots, he completed his first year at the Irkutsk Polytechnic Institute in 1987. He then entered the Chernigov school in 1987 and graduated with a gold medal in 1991. In 2003 he graduated from the Moscow State University in Economics, Statistics and Information Theory.

Military career

Since 1991, Ivanishin served in combatant units of the Russian Air Force. After graduating from the Chernigov Higher Military Aviation School, he flew MiG-29 jet fighters in the Borisoglebsk military unit, Voronezh region. From 1992 he was a senior fighter pilot in the 159th Fighter Aviation Regiment in Petrozavodsk, Karelia, flying Su-27 aircraft. He logged 507 flying hours and made 180 parachute jumps.

Cosmonaut career

Ivanishin was enlisted as a cosmonaut candidate on 29 May 2003, began training on 16 June 2003, and passed state examinations with an 'excellent' rating on 28 June 2005. He received the test cosmonaut qualification on 5 July 2005. He served as backup commander for Soyuz TMA-20 and for ISS Expedition 27. On 14 November 2011 he launched as flight engineer on Soyuz TMA-22 with Anton Shkaplerov and Daniel Burbank, arriving at the ISS on 16 November.

They joined Expedition 29, which ended on 21 November 2011 when Soyuz TMA-02M departed. Burbank then commanded Expedition 30. On 21 December 2011, Soyuz TMA-03M brought Oleg Kononenko, André Kuipers, and Donald Pettit to the station. On 16 February 2012, Ivanishin supported a spacewalk by Shkaplerov and Kononenko, who performed a six-hour, 15-minute EVA from the Pirs airlock.

Due to a delay in launching Soyuz TMA-04M, the landing of Soyuz TMA-22 was postponed to 27 April 2012, when Ivanishin, Shkaplerov, and Burbank landed in Kazakhstan after 165 days in orbit. On 15 October 2021, Roscosmos announced Ivanishin's retirement from the Cosmonaut training centre to focus on scientific activities.
