Three childlike men in suits navigate absurd New York adventures.
Last updated
Stella is an American sketch comedy television series that aired on Comedy Central from June 28 to August 30, 2005. It was created by and stars Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and David Wain, former cast members of MTV's The State. The series ran for 10 episodes and was later released on DVD on September 12, 2006.
Format
Stella brings the comedy troupe’s stage show and short films to television. The series follows three men, two named Michael and one named David, who dress in suits, share a New York apartment, act like children, and appear to have no jobs. It mixes sketch comedy with a sitcom structure, giving each episode a main storyline and recurring characters, but it ignores continuity and leans into surreal humor. Before the show, the trio created 28 short films from 1998 to 2002, shown during their live performances.
These shorts covered absurd topics like hunting for Santa, growing mustaches, and eating pizza. For the TV series, the group toned down much of their earlier material, which often came from taboo or adult subjects such as necrophilia and sex toys. The humor is absurdist. Guest stars include Paul Rudd, Rashida Jones, Sam Rockwell, Topher Grace, Tim Blake Nelson, Alan Ruck, Janeane Garofalo, Elizabeth Banks, and Edward Norton.
