Key facts and history

A 1992 performance on HBO's Def Comedy Jam brought him national attention.[3] In 2001, Fox aired his sitcom The Bernie Mac Show, which won an Emmy, a Peabody Award, and the Humanitas Prize.[4] Mary McCullough and Jeffrey Harrison were the parents of Bernie Mac, who was their second child; he grew up on Chicago's south side with his single mother and grandparents.[5] Mac's secondary education started at Chicago Vocational High School, but after his mother died during his sophomore year, he relocated to Tampa, Florida to attend Jesuit High School.[6]

After coming back to Chicago, Mac finished his studies at Chicago Vocational in 1975 and then held multiple jobs while performing comedy on weekends.[7] The Three Stooges, along with comedians Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx, were among those who influenced Mac.[3] Mac's stand-up career began at Chicago's Cotton Club, and when he was 32 years old he won the Miller Lite Comedy Search.[3]
