Playing career
Modin began his youth hockey with Njurunda SK, the same club that produced Henrik Zetterberg. He was selected 64th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1994 NHL entry draft. On October 1, 1999, Toronto traded him to the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he later served as an alternate captain for several seasons. In 2001, Modin was the Lightning's sole representative at the 51st NHL All-Star Game and won the Hardest Shot competition with a 102.1 mph blast. He won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in the 2003–04 season. During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, Modin returned to Sweden and played for Timrå IK, recording 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points. On June 30, 2006, he was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets along with Fredrik Norrena in exchange for Marc Denis. Modin served as an alternate captain for Columbus, but his production declined due to injuries. He scored a goal in game four of the Blue Jackets' first-ever playoff series, against the Detroit Red Wings. On March 3, 2010, Columbus traded Modin to the Los Angeles Kings for future considerations. He signed a one-year free-agent contract with the Atlanta Thrashers on September 6, 2010, posting 7 goals in 36 games. On February 28, 2011, the Thrashers traded him to the Calgary Flames for a seventh-round pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft. Hampered by a lingering back injury in his final two seasons, Modin announced his retirement on May 19, 2011.
