Rules
Twenty-six of the 28 existing NHL teams were allowed to protect either one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards or two goaltenders, three defensemen, and seven forwards. The Atlanta Thrashers and Nashville Predators, as the two newest franchises, had their entire rosters protected. For teams protecting only one goaltender, no experience requirement applied to unprotected goaltenders. Teams protecting two goaltenders had to leave unprotected only goaltenders who had appeared in at least 10 NHL games in 1999–2000 or 25 games combined over 1998–99 and 1999–2000, with each game requiring a minimum of 31 minutes in net. Each team had to leave unprotected at least one defenseman who had played 40 games in 1999–2000 or 70 games over the previous two seasons, and at least two forwards meeting the same thresholds. Fifty-two players were selected; each existing team lost two players, and both expansion teams filled a roster of 26. Only one goaltender or one defenseman could be taken from each franchise. The Blue Jackets and Wild each used their first 24 picks on three goaltenders, eight defensemen, and thirteen forwards, with the final two picks open to any position.
Deals
In exchange for agreeing not to select certain unprotected players, the Blue Jackets and Wild received concessions from other franchises. On June 11, 2000, San Jose traded Jan Caloun, a ninth-round pick (Martin Paroulek) in the 2000 entry draft, and a conditional pick in the 2001 entry draft to Columbus after the Blue Jackets agreed not to select Evgeni Nabokov. On June 23, 2000, Buffalo traded Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre, Matt Davidson, and two fifth-round picks (one each in 2000 and 2001) to Columbus after the Blue Jackets agreed not to select Dominik Hasek or Martin Biron. On June 11, 2000, San Jose traded Andy Sutton, a seventh-round pick (Peter Bartos) in the 2000 entry draft, and a third-round pick in the 2001 entry draft to Minnesota for an eighth-round pick in the 2000 entry draft after the Wild agreed not to select Evgeni Nabokov.
