Early life
Anderson grew up in Miami, Oklahoma, where he played sports and performed in a church band. After high school, he attended Oklahoma State University, joined the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and earned a degree in engineering. He also played baseball at OSU, attracting attention from the Kansas City Royals, but a shoulder injury ended his baseball aspirations. He then placed second in the Mr. Oklahoma bodybuilding competition.
Career
After graduating, Anderson worked for an engineering firm in Dallas for a year and a half before resigning to pursue music. He learned guitar from his brother Brian, performed at the Grapevine Opry for three years, and later at the Texas State Fair and Six Flags. To support himself, he worked as a landscaper and personal trainer. He enrolled in a physical therapy program at the University of Texas at Austin but put it on hold a month before starting to produce his first CD. After recording that CD in Nashville, he marketed it to radio stations and formed a band in 2000. His first songwriting success came in 2001 when Garth Brooks and George Jones recorded "Beer Run (B Double E R-U-N)", which Anderson co-wrote with others including George Ducas. He opened for Montgomery Gentry in 2002 and signed with Arista Nashville. He later co-wrote Big & Rich's number one single "Lost in This Moment" and songs for Gretchen Wilson. His debut album Three Chord Country and American Rock & Roll produced the singles "Pickin' Wildflowers", "XXL", and "Every Time I Hear Your Name". The title track was remixed by Mark Hudson with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler as guest vocalist but did not chart. The final single "Podunk" reached number 34. Anderson moved to Columbia Records in 2007, and his second album C'mon! was released on August 5, 2008. Its second single "I Still Miss You" became his first Top 5 country hit.
