Lore & Background

Fedorov's journey began when he defected from the Soviet Union in July 1990. After playing for CSKA Moscow at just 16, he was drafted by the Red Wings in 1989. Team executive Jim Lites and general manager Jim Devellano orchestrated his escape; Lites met Fedorov outside his hotel in Portland during the Goodwill Games and flew him to Detroit on owner Mike Ilitch's private jet. Upon joining the NHL, he was immediately described as "three great players in one" by former captain Steve Yzerman, who called him the "best skater I've ever seen."

During the 1993–94 season, Fedorov delivered an historic performance, winning the Hart Trophy, the Frank J. Selke Trophy, and the Lester B. Pearson Award. He finished second in scoring with 56 goals and 120 points behind Wayne Gretzky, who admitted he had "never seen a player dominate the game the way Sergei did." That same season, Scotty Bowman praised his "phenomenal" leg strength.

Reader's Guide

Fedorov's career is defined by specific milestones: he played over 1,200 NHL games and scored exactly 483 goals. He was a three-time Olympian and an ambassador for Russia at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. In the lockout-shortened 1994–95 season, he scored all four of Detroit's goals in a 4–4 tie against Los Angeles on February 12. That same year, despite Detroit losing the Finals to New Jersey, Fedorov led all playoff scorers with 24 points. He signed a historic deal with Nike as their first non-North American spokesman, famous for promoting "white skates." After retiring from the NHL in 2009, he played his final professional games for Metallurg Magnitogorsk, becoming captain in September 2011. On August 19, 2025, the Red Wings announced his number 91 jersey would be retired on January 12, 2026.
