Tommy Salo began his professional career in Sweden's Elitserien with Västerås IK before being drafted by the New York Islanders in 1993. He debuted in the NHL in 1994–95 but spent most of his first two seasons with the Utah Grizzlies of the IHL, where he won back-to-back Turner Cups and earned league MVP and rookie of the year honors in 1995. After emerging as the Islanders' starter in 1996–97, he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in March 1999. In Edmonton, Salo became a two-time All-Star and set franchise records for shutouts (23) and single-season shutouts (8 in 2000–01). He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in March 2004 but never played for them due to the 2004–05 NHL lockout, during which he returned to Sweden and later retired due to chronic hip pain.
