Playing career
Justin Barron spent three seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads in the QMJHL before the Colorado Avalanche picked him 25th overall in the first round of the 2020 NHL draft. He became the Mooseheads’ captain for the 2020-21 season, a campaign shortened by the pandemic, and put up 31 points across 33 games. In April 2021, he inked a three-year entry-level deal with the Avalanche and also signed an amateur tryout with their AHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles, finishing that season with them. Barron’s first NHL game came on December 15, 2021, against the New York Rangers. That year, he notched six goals and 18 assists in 50 AHL games with the Eagles, plus two scoreless appearances for the Avalanche. In March 2022, Colorado sent Barron and a 2024 second-round pick to the Montreal Canadiens for forward Artturi Lehkonen. When he arrived in Montreal, Barron drew positive attention for speaking French well, thanks to immersion classes he took in Nova Scotia. He debuted for the Canadiens on March 27 against the New Jersey Devils, logging nearly 18 minutes of ice time. Two days later, he earned his first NHL point with an assist against the Florida Panthers. On April 5, in his first home game at the Bell Centre, he scored his first NHL goal against the Ottawa Senators but left early after hurting his ankle. A week after that, the team said his season was over, and he would not join the Laval Rocket for the Calder Cup playoffs.
International play
Barron first represented Hockey Canada at the 2017 World U-17 Hockey Challenge as part of team Canada Red, earning a silver medal. He won gold with the national under-18 team at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. In December 2020, he was selected for the national junior team at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, recording two assists in seven games as Canada lost the gold medal game to the United States. After the Montreal Canadiens did not qualify for the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs, Barron accepted an invitation to join the national senior team at the 2023 IIHF World Championship, winning a gold medal.
