Apparatjik is a multinational supergroup formed in 2008, consisting of bassist Guy Berryman (Coldplay), guitarist/keyboardist Magne Furuholmen (a-ha), singer/guitarist Jonas Bjerre (Mew), and drummer/producer Martin Terefe. The band's name, derived from the Russian word 'apparatchik,' translates literally to 'agent of the apparatus' and has historically referred to a Communist agent or spy, as well as an official or bureaucrat in any organization. Background

Apparatjik's first live performance took place at the eleventh edition of club transmediale in Berlin, from 28 January to 7 February 2010, where the band performed inside a specially constructed cube at the WMF on 1 February 2010. That same day, their debut album 'We Are Here' was released for digital download via their official website. Their first public performances occurred at the Deutsche Bank towers in Frankfurt from 2–4 March 2011. The band later released the extended play '4 Can Keep A Secret If 3 Of Them Are Dead' and re-released 'We Are Here' on iTunes in standard and deluxe versions on 15 June 2010.

In 2010, the band played at the Flø festival in Norway and then their third concert in London on 23 September, where the cube was transported to the red summer pavilion designed by Jean Nouvel at the Serpentine Galleries in Hyde Park. Their first song played on BBC Radio 1 was a radio edit of 'Datascroller' on 14 June 2010. In February 2011, Apparatjik launched 'agreeneryouniverse,' a project inviting people worldwide to plant a tree, take a picture, and upload it; the first 1,000 participants received new music as a gift. A download-only single 'Combat Disco Music' was released on 28 March 2011.

On 11 November 2011, the band released their second album 'Square Peg In A Round Hole' as a free iPad application, and four days later it was given away as part of the agreeneryouniverse project. In 2012, they collaborated with Canadian singer Lowell on the extended play 'If You Can, Solve This Jumble.' On 1 February 2020, Apparatjik uploaded a video titled '20 3 20' containing a short music clip, which Magne Furuholmen described as part of an ongoing Julia Pastrana project. A single called 'Julia' was released on 20 March 2020 with a lyric video.
