Plantation

Most coffee grown on the island is a derivative of Coffea arabica Typica, constituting 70% of the yield. Other varieties include hybrid varieties of caturra and geisha. Farming methods aim for high production with optimum acidity.

Regulation

The Ministry of Agriculture and its subordinate office, the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Authority (previously the Coffee Industry Board), oversee the coffee sector. The Coffee Industry Development Company (CIDCO) assists farmers owning 1 ha or more of coffee land. The Coffee Industry Regulation Act restricts the Blue Mountain label to coffee harvested from the parishes of Saint Andrew, Saint Thomas, Portland, and Saint Mary.

Production

Coffee provides employment through production, processing, and sale. Over 80% of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is exported to Japan.
