A headland, sometimes simply called a head, is a type of promontory that juts out into a body of water. It is typically high ground with a steep drop-off. When a headland is particularly large, it is often referred to as a cape. These landforms are marked by heavy, crashing waves, rocky shorelines, rapid erosion, and steep sea cliffs. Headlands and bays commonly occur together along the same stretch of coast. While a bay is surrounded by land on three sides, a headland is surrounded by water on three sides. They develop on discordant coastlines, where alternating bands of hard and soft rock run at a right angle to the shore. Softer rocks like sands and clays erode away to form bays, leaving behind more resistant rocks such as chalk, limestone, and granite, which stand out as headlands or peninsulas. Over time, sediment filling the bays and erosion wearing down the headlands cause the coastline to straighten, after which the entire cycle begins again.
