Clare
A half-human warrior fights to reclaim her soul from a monstrous fate.
Clare is introduced in the Claymore manga as No. 47, a human-Yoma hybrid created by The Organization to hunt shape-shifting demons known as Yoma. As one of many female warriors clad in armored uniforms and wielding large claymore swords, she belongs to the collective group known by villagers as 'Silver-eyed Witches' due to their distinctive silver eyes—a title applied to all Claymores rather than a unique individual moniker earned solely by her. Her journey begins after Teresa slays a Yoma at a village; Clare later finds Raki wandering alone amidst the aftermath, taking him on as her companion despite organizational norms. This act marks the start of her transformation from a disposable weapon into a protector driven by personal bonds and a desire for vengeance against those who wronged her.

Lore & Background
The world of Claymore is set across a vast fictional continent divided into multiple regions (North, South, East, West), where humans are constantly threatened by Yoma, humanoid shape-shifters that feed on people. To counter this menace, The Organization creates female warriors infused with demonic energy called Yoki, granting them superhuman strength and the ability to sense and kill Yoma. These warriors, known as Claymores or collectively as 'Silver-eyed Witches,' wear armored uniforms and wield massive swords.
There are exactly 47 active Claymores in total across all regions of the Organization, ranked from No. 1 to No. 47 based on their current combat strength and Yoki capacity, with ranks shifting dynamically according to relative power rather than just baseline potential. While male warriors were historically unable to control Yoki at all, many female warriors eventually succumb to the allure of 'awakening'—a transformation into a super-Yoma triggered by excessive use of Yoki.
Clare's existence embodies the tension between human consciousness and monstrous instinct, as she must constantly suppress her own Yoki to avoid becoming an Awakened Being like Priscilla, who beheaded Teresa (whose head was later preserved by The Organization).
Reader's Guide
Clare begins as No. 47, the lowest-ranked warrior in The Organization's hierarchy of 47 districts. She lacks memories of her human life before transformation and is initially defined solely by her rank. Her path changes when she saves Raki from a Yoma, breaking protocol by taking him as a companion. This decision sets her on a collision course with The Organization while deepening her emotional ties to the human world.
Key moments include her interactions with Teresa's legacy, where she learns techniques like sensing how an enemy will attack next. She also faces powerful foes such as Isley and Priscilla, testing her ability to control her Yoki without fully awakening. Unlike many warriors who succumb to their inner demons, Clare maintains a fragile balance between human will and monster strength. Her fighting style emphasizes speed and precision over brute force, often incorporating unique sword techniques passed down from mentors like Teresa. By the story's end, she survives as a rare example of someone who defied her predetermined fate.
