He is regarded among the most distinguished violinists in history.[1] His younger brother Józef and nephew Adam Tadeusz were also accomplished musicians.[1]
Life and work
From 1860 to 1872 he lived and taught in St Petersburg.[2] He died on 31 March 1880.[1] Wieniawski started learning the violin when he was five, and at age eight (though some accounts say nine) he became a student at the Paris Conservatoire in 1843.[2][3] Between 1872 and 1874 he went on a concert tour of the U.S.[2]
While living in Brussels, Wieniawski's physical condition worsened, and he frequently had to pause performances mid-concert.[4] Nadezhda von Meck brought him into her home and gave him medical care on 14 February 1880.[4]
