Mandaue

Highly urbanized city in Cebu, industrial hub of Region VII.

Last updated

It is located on the central coastal plains of the province of Cebu, Philippines.[1] The city links mainland Cebu to Mactan Island through the 1st Mandaue-Mactan Bridge and the 2nd Mandaue-Mactan Bridge.[2]

Geography and history

The name Mandaue is derived from thick, clinging vines known as “mantawi” which were abundant in the area before the Spanish conquest.[1] A community was established in Mandaue by a flourishing group of Austronesian people.[3] The town was managed by the Jesuit in 1638 then a century later by the Recollects.[4] Spanish colonial authorities issued a decree compelling the indigenous population of Mandaue to relocate into a designated town.[4]

Republic Act 5519 granted Mandaue its city charter on June 21, 1969, according to one source, while another source gives the date as August 30, 1969.[1][5] A large portion of Mandaue's terrain, 77.37%, falls within the 0-8% slope classification, indicating very flat land.[6] Approximately 70% of Mandaue's land area is primarily composed of the Mandaue Clay Loam soil type.[6]

What the cited sources add

The Mandaue City government website states the city was founded on April 7, 1521.[2] The same article notes the founder was a concessionaire in three canteens in Mandaue.[7] The "Brilliance of Mandaue City" account describes the Mantawi Festival, which uses street dancing and floats to recreate the history of Mandaue.[1] That account also states top corporations in the city represent floats projecting Mandaue as an economic hub.[1]

The Freeman, in a 2009 article, states that the inaugural Julie’s Bakeshop location began operations in the Wireless district of Mandaue City on January 6, 1981.[7]
