OnEscapee
Action-adventure game with rotoscoped graphics and minimal dialogue.
OnEscapee (pronounced "One Escapee") is an action-adventure video game that originally came out for the Amiga in 1996. The game was created by Invictus Games and released by the German publisher Sadeness Software Ltd. It was distributed on CD, which was uncommon at the time because the Amiga 1200 didn't come with a CD drive—players had to buy an external CD-ROM drive or modify their computer to install an internal one to run the game. Since Invictus is a Hungarian team, they kept text and speech to a minimum to make the game accessible internationally. This allowed support for 12 languages. The only language that appears in the game is in the music used in the title screen and one scene, as well as in the menus, help text, and the opening full-motion video sequence. Invictus re-released the software as freeware for Microsoft Windows in 2004 to mark the company's 10th anniversary. In 2024, the game came out on Nintendo Switch under the title *OnEscapee*.
In terms of gameplay, OnEscapee closely resembles *Another World* and *Flashback: The Quest for Identity*, using similar rotoscoped, hand-drawn graphics.
The plot begins with Daniel White reflecting in a monologue about humanity's first contact with "the first aliens," describing how they brought about "new civilizations." He notes that around the same time, "healthy, strong men" started vanishing. A cutscene then shows a metropolis where humanity presumably lives. Although the cities are well-lit and appear inhabited, very few humans are seen in the game—most life forms are animals or robots. It's unclear where the game takes place. There seems to be no human influence on the land, as most animals and even plants are alien. This could mean the alien culture has invaded Earth, or that White has landed on an alien planet and must become an "escapee" to return home—a plot similar to *Flashback*.
The player sees an unmarked vehicle flying from the city into an aerial area with mountains in the background. Two drivers in the front have captured a male (White) in the back. When White wakes up and struggles, the driver loses control and crashes. The view then switches to a garbage disposal droid's console, which lists all three occupants as dead and sends a unit to clear the wreckage.

Lore & Background
OnEscapee was developed by Invictus Games, a Hungarian team, and published by German-based Sadeness Software Ltd. It was distributed on CD, an unusual format for the Amiga 1200, which lacked a built-in CD drive, forcing users to purchase an external CD-ROM drive or modify their computer. To maximize international appeal, text and speech were kept to a minimum, with support for 12 languages; the only language present appears in the music used in the titles, one scene, the menus, help text, and the opening FMV sequence.
The plot follows Daniel White, who recounts humanity's first encounter with aliens and the subsequent disappearance of healthy, strong men.
Reader's Guide
OnEscapee is significant as a late-era Amiga title that embraced CD distribution despite hardware limitations, reflecting the platform's transition toward multimedia. Its gameplay and rotoscoped graphics draw direct comparison to Another World and Flashback: The Quest for Identity, placing it within a lineage of cinematic platformers. The game's minimal text and multilingual support exemplify a strategy to reach a global audience from a small Hungarian developer. Its re-release as freeware in 2004 and later on Nintendo Switch in 2024 demonstrate enduring interest and the preservation of niche titles. The ambiguous plot, with its unresolved setting and protagonist's sacrifice, contributes to its cult status among retro gaming enthusiasts.
