Lore & Background

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty! was announced in July 2010 by Just Add Water, with work beginning after the completion of Stranger's Wrath HD on PS3. The game was developed using the Unity engine after a switch from a previous engine, which required rebuilding the entire game over eight months. Series creator Lorne Lanning described it as 'basically Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee being redone in a 3D physics engine as a 2D side-scrolling platformer.' The remake features 2.5D graphics, continuous scrolling instead of the original's flip screens, and an enhanced GameSpeak system with more dialogue and responses.

Reader's Guide

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty! is significant as a faithful yet updated reimagining of a classic 1990s platformer, demonstrating how a cult title can be rebuilt for modern audiences while preserving core gameplay. Its release across numerous platforms—from eighth-generation consoles to mobile devices—helped introduce the Oddworld series to a new generation. The game's inclusion of difficulty settings, leaderboards, and expanded content (such as 299 Mudokons to rescue versus the original's 99) showed a careful balance between nostalgia and innovation. Its sequel, Oddworld: Soulstorm, released in April 2021, continued the series' revival. The remake's development, including a mid-production engine switch to Unity, highlights the challenges of modernizing older games.
