Edwards was born at Mineola Hospital in Mineola, New York. His father, Jovon, played in Minor League Baseball. The Edwards family lived in different places in Long Island until he was five years old, when they moved to South Florida. He graduated from North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, Florida. The San Diego Padres selected Edwards with the 38th overall pick in the 2018 MLB draft, and he signed for $2.6 million. He was later traded to the Tampa Bay Rays and then to the Miami Marlins. He has never played for the Cincinnati Reds organization.
