History
David Ellison, son of Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, established Skydance Productions in 2006. The name came from aerobatic flying maneuvers called skydancing. Its debut film was Flyboys (2006), co-financed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and starring Ellison. In fall 2009, Skydance entered a five-year co-financing, production and distribution agreement with Paramount Pictures. Before August 2010, Dana Goldberg was hired as chief creative officer from Village Roadshow Pictures. That same month, with an equity investment from Larry Ellison, the company raised $350 million in equity and credit. An attempted production client deal with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci in October 2011 did not materialize. Skydance Television launched on May 1, 2013, with Marcy Ross as president. In 2014, Jesse Sisgold joined as President of Business Affairs & Strategic Planning and later became COO; he was promoted to president in 2017. Don Granger became executive vice president of Feature Productions in March 2014. Anne Globe joined as chief marketing officer in March 2015. Later in 2015, Skydance raised $700 million in new financing. The Paramount slate deal was renewed in summer 2013 for four more years. Skydance Interactive was launched on May 3, 2016, after acquiring The Workshop Entertainment. In 2016, the company rebranded from Skydance Productions to Skydance Media.

Skydance Television began operations on May 1, 2013, with Marcy Ross as president and Carolyn Harris as vice president. Ross left in January 2020, transitioning to a deal with the media company while remaining executive producer on several shows; Bill Bost succeeded her as president. In November 2022, Bost stepped down and was replaced by Netflix's Matt Thunell. Jake Rose joined as EVP Production in May 2014; Carol Turner replaced him in March 2018. The division's first show, Manhattan, aired on WGN America in July 2014 and was canceled after two seasons in 2015. In April 2017, director Sam Raimi signed a first-look deal with Skydance Television. Producers Patrick Massett and John Zinman signed a multi-year overall agreement in September 2017. A series adaptation of Isaac Asimov's Foundation was announced in 2017 with David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman as writers; Apple TV+ bought streaming rights in 2018 and renewed it for a second season upon its 2021 release. In June 2018, Dietland aired on AMC under the Uncharted label.
